The American Heart Association’s Internship Program provides college students an opportunity for hands-on experience in various facets for individuals interested in gaining work experience with a non-profit, voluntary health organization. 

 

As an intern supporting our our Erie, PA Heart Ball events, you will play a key role in driving the success of these impactful campaigns. Your responsibilities will include a variety of tasks that contribute to the planning, execution, and follow-up of these life-saving initiatives. The intern will also be able to work with the communications team and develop social media content and other communication strategies.

Internship Overview:

  • Time Commitment: 20 hours
  • Internship Duration: 5/19/25-8/22/25
  • Location: Hybrid position. Intern must live in the Erie, PA region
  • Salary: $23.00 per hour

Internship Outcomes:

Individuals participating in the internship program are provided with an opportunity to:

  • Gain important and practical job skills to be successful in a non-profit environment.

  • Complete an internship that enriches your academic and professional resume as well as enriching your personal life by making a difference in the lives of others.

 

Responsibilities

  • Work closely with volunteers and staff to ensure successful event(s).
  • Work with staff and volunteer chairpersons to assist with team recruitment, executive challenge, Nitro 90 calls, calendar management, Revenue Generation, Sponsorship, Auction, Communications, Customer Relations, Facilities (including Logistics) and Decorations.
  • Where possible, attend Heart Walk and/or Heart Ball Committee meetings.
  • Follow up regularly with staff and key volunteers and monitor event progress.
  • Work with AHA staff to develop event timeline and day-of-event detailed agenda.
  • Attend the heart ball, heart walk, Go Red and related events.
  • Thank sponsors, donors/participants and volunteers, and ensure that appropriate recognition activities take place.
  • Participate in evaluation meeting and assist with planning for next year’s event.
  • Attend corporate wellness events and health fairs to represent AHA/ASA in the community
  • Other duties as assigned by AHA staff.

 

Qualifications

  • Candidates who are seniors or graduate students pursuing a degree in business, communications, public relations, nonprofit fundraising, or event management.
  • Demonstrated excellence in written communication skills.
  • Demonstrated skills in effective one-on-one and group communications and comfort with working professionally with all levels of community leaders, volunteers, and staff.
  • Effective oral and presentation communication skills.
  • Proficient in multiple social media platforms.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, dynamic environment managing multiple priorities involving multiple entities.
  • Intermediate to excellent proficiency in MS Word, Excel, Outlook and PowerPoint.
  • Basic knowledge of Canva.
  • Required Equipment: Reliable WiFi Connection and reliable transportation.
  • Minimum availability of 20 hrs/wk, M-F between the hours of 8:30am-5pm.
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States for any employer without sponsorship, now or in the future.  For any roles working remotely, the work must also be performed inside the United States, not in a foreign country.
