Responsibilities

The Marketing Communications Manager, Donor Engagement plans, develops, and owns the timely production of polished and compelling donor-facing content and high-impact materials, partnering across teams to develop communications that build trust, convey impact, and inspire continued engagement.  This position leads and delivers on a well-established scope of work and a dynamic portfolio of projects supporting the cultivation and stewardship of top philanthropic donors.

 

The role requires a strategic, creative, and organized marcom professional who can envision and /or respond to a communicated vision to develop content strategy, outlines, scripts, and plans; develop and write content for various purposes; and produce outputs in a wide variety of formats. The individual will conduct interviews with prioritized individuals, engaging in a polished manner and guiding discussions to meet content objectives.

 

The Marketing Communications Manager works independently as well as with others to deliver a high-quality final product.  The individual will be comfortable working with remote collaborators and colleagues, openly leading project plans and timelines, running vendor resources, communicating clearly, and getting results.  The individual will be naturally curious, continually aspiring to develop a strong command of the value, mission, programs,, and initiatives of the American Heart Association.

Donor Impact Reporting Portfolio Management

  • Develop compelling impact reports for assigned gifts, donors, and /or programs ensuring timely, personalized, and high-quality stewardship communications for top-tier donors and Giving Society members.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally to curate accurate /citable data points, stories, and outcomes for reports and features, to demonstrate the tangible impact of donor support.
  • Ensure reports are visually engaging, emotionally resonant, and consistent with brand and messaging standards.
  • Continuously improve processes for tracking, producing, and delivering impact reports to meet and exceed donor expectations.
  • Monitor donor feedback and engagement to refine storytelling strategies and report formats over time.

Content Creation & Editorial Leadership

  • Plan, research, write, edit, and curate a wide variety of donor-facing content, including but not limited to:
    • Donor stewardship magazines and newsletters.
    • Annual report content.
    • Targeted email campaigns and multi-email journeys.
    • Executive scripts and speaking points for donor events.
    • Community impact stories, funding opportunity spotlights, and success stories.
    • Web and social media content tailored for donor engagement.
    • Acknowledgement templates and stewardship reporting materials.
  • Conduct interviews with donors, volunteers, and stakeholders to develop authentic, inspiring narratives.
  • Edit content from guest contributors to ensure clarity, tone, and alignment with brand and donor engagement goals.

Production & Creative Support

  • Support executive communication needs for national donor events and high-level engagements.
  • Support the implementation of donor recognition and visibility plans.

 

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience.
  • At least three (3) years of experience.
  • Experience in a communications, marketing, or public relations role.
  • Experience managing communications, project management, and editorial planning.
  • Experience working with volunteers and donors.
  • Highly organized, with demonstrated ability to manage complex projects, multi-task, and set priorities.
  • Strong writer with excellent written and verbal communication skills, adaptable to a variety of mediums.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and as a member of a team.
  • Demonstrated analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to think critically and with context.
  • Self-motivated and able to work with limited supervision.
  • Solid computer skills with the capability to master new software applications and technologies. Excellent Microsoft Word, Outlook, Excel, Zoom/Teams and PowerPoint skills required. 
  • Ability to engage all major, principal, and planned donor types, and to collaborate with partners across departments and/or teams.
  • Experience producing work for and/or with senior leadership and/or executives.
  • Demonstrated ability to advance and align with established strategy and/or vision, with the ability to take direction while also contributing ideas and value.
  • Experience writing in AP style and adherence to editorial and branding guidelines.
  • Ability to travel up to 5% local and overnight stay

 

Preferred Experience:

  • Five (5) – Eight (8) years of proven experience.
  • Prior experience in a non-profit setting, national level.
  • Experience in a communications, marketing, or public relations role, on a national scope level, preferred
  • Experience working with donors and volunteers in a philanthropy setting.
  • Working in a collaborative setting.
  • Knowledge of design, such as Canva, Adobe InDesign, Adobe Illustrator, or other similar platforms.
  • Ability to leverage data to inform content development decisions.
  • Experience navigating the complexities of a large, matrixed organization.
  • Experience providing updates in Customer Relationship Management (CRM) software.
