The American Heart Association has an excellent opportunity for a Director, Clinical Quality Measures, supporting our National Center office located in Dallas, TX. This role can be home-based.

 

This is a full-time, benefits-eligible, grant-funded opportunity. Current funding will expire 08/30/2027 with the possibility of extension.

 

The Director, Clinical Quality Measures, will provide strategic leadership for the development, implementation, maintenance, and dissemination of clinical quality measures that advance cardiovascular and brain health outcomes. This role will oversee a portfolio of measure development initiatives, performance improvement programs, and industry-sponsored quality projects designed to improve care delivery, support value-based care, and drive measurable improvements in patient outcomes.

 

This position serves as a key leader across Clinical Research, Quality, Outcomes Research & Analytics (QORA), National Corporate Relations, Advocacy, and Scientific Affairs to translate evidence-based guidelines into scalable quality measurement solutions. The Director will work closely with healthcare systems, clinicians, payers, professional societies, government agencies, and industry partners to advance innovative quality measurement strategies and implementation efforts.

Responsibilities

This position serves as a key leader across Clinical Research, Quality, Outcomes Research & Analytics (QORA), National Corporate Relations, Advocacy, and Scientific Affairs to translate evidence-based guidelines into scalable quality measurement solutions. The Director will work closely with healthcare systems, clinicians, payers, professional societies, government agencies, and industry partners to advance innovative quality measurement strategies and implementation efforts.

 

  • Lead the strategic development, execution, and maintenance of the American Heart Association's portfolio of clinical quality measures across cardiovascular, stroke, and related therapeutic areas.
  • Direct measure development activities, including environmental scans, literature reviews, technical expert panel engagement, specification development, testing, validation, and implementation planning.
  • Oversee measure stewardship activities and ensure compliance with applicable standards and reporting requirements.
  • Collaborate with clinical experts, scientific volunteers, healthcare organizations, and external stakeholders to identify priority areas for quality measurement and performance improvement.
  • Lead industry-sponsored quality measurement and evidence-generation initiatives focused on improving healthcare quality, outcomes, and guideline adherence.
  • Translate clinical practice guidelines into actionable quality measures that support value-based care, accreditation, certification, and quality improvement programs.
  • Collaborate with Quality Improvement, QORA, and Data Science teams to evaluate measure performance and identify opportunities for innovation using registry, EHR, claims, and other real-world data sources.
  • Develop and manage relationships with healthcare systems, payers, federal agencies, professional societies, and industry partners.
  • Serve as senior project lead for complex quality measurement initiatives, ensuring scientific rigor, operational excellence, budget management, and stakeholder satisfaction.
  • Support business development efforts by contributing to proposals, scopes of work, budgets, and presentations for prospective partners and sponsors.
  • Monitor national trends in quality measurement, digital quality measures (dQMs), electronic clinical quality measures (eCQMs), interoperability, and value-based care models.
  • Present findings, methodologies, and strategic recommendations to executive leadership, sponsors, advisory groups, and external audiences.
  • Mentor and support cross-functional teams involved in measure development, implementation science, and quality improvement activities.
  • Perform other duties as requested and special projects at the request of executive leadership.

Qualifications

  • Master's Degree in Public Health (MPH), Health Services Research, Healthcare Administration, Nursing, Clinical Informatics, Epidemiology, or related field preferred.
  • 3 years of relevant experience in healthcare quality measurement, clinical research, healthcare analytics, population health, or quality improvement.
  • 3 years of leadership experience. 
  • Experience leading clinical quality measure development, implementation, stewardship, or evaluation initiatives.
  • Strong knowledge of healthcare quality measurement methodologies, including eCQMs, dQMs, outcome measures, process measures, and patient-reported outcome measures.
  • Experience working with clinical data sources, including EHRs, registries, claims data, and other real-world data assets.
  • Experience leading cross-functional initiatives with executive visibility and external stakeholder engagement.
  • Strong understanding of healthcare quality reporting programs, accreditation, certification, and value-based care models.
  • Excellent project management skills with demonstrated ability to manage multiple complex initiatives simultaneously.
  • Strong verbal, written, and executive presentation skills.
  • Ability to translate clinical, scientific, and technical concepts into actionable business and operational strategies.
  • Superior attention to detail; outstanding organization and prioritization skills.
  • Working knowledge of MS Office Suite applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Project).
  • Ability to travel up to 20% annually.

Preferred Experience

  • Experience with CMS quality programs, measure endorsement processes, and federal quality reporting initiatives.
  • Experience developing or implementing electronic clinical quality measures (eCQMs), digital quality measures (dQMs), or FHIR-based quality measures.
  • Experience working with cardiovascular, stroke, heart failure, arrhythmia, lipid management, or other chronic disease quality initiatives.
  • Experience with clinical registries, healthcare analytics platforms, or large-scale quality improvement collaboratives.

Compensation & Benefits

The expected pay range will be $120,000 to $140,000. Pay is commensurate with experience; geographic differentials to the pay range may apply.
