The Operations & Project Management Intern will support department-wide initiatives by coordinating projects, examining current workflows, developing resources, identifying gaps and white-space opportunities, and recommending improvements that benefit the overall team. The intern will collaborate with cross-functional stakeholders and help translate ideas into clear, sustainable operational practices. The Association offers many resources to help you maintain work-life harmonization through your changing needs and life situations.  To help you be successful, you will have access to Heart U, our award-winning corporate university, as well as training and support locally and through our National Center.

 

The American Heart Association’s Internship Program provides college students an opportunity for hands-on experience in various facets for individuals interested in gaining work experience with a non-profit, voluntary health organization.

Internship Overview:

  • Time Commitment: 20-25 hours per week
  • Internship Duration:  1/25/27-5/7/27​
  • Location: Remote in Central and Eastern Time Zone
  • Salary: $23.00 per hour

Responsibilities

Tasks could include things like the following:

Project Management & Coordination 

  • Assist with planning, organizing, and monitoring departmental projects and strategic initiatives from initiation through completion. 
  • Maintain project plans, workback schedules, milestones, action logs, decision records, risks, and dependencies. 
  • Prepare meeting materials; capture decisions, action items, owners, and next steps; and support timely follow-up on deliverables. 
  • Coordinate information across workstreams and help ensure stakeholders have clear visibility into project status and priorities. 

Operational Workflow & Process Improvement 

  • Document current-state workflows and help design clear, practical future-state processes. 
  • Identify bottlenecks, duplicative work, handoff issues, unclear ownership, and other operational pain points. 
  • Gather stakeholder feedback, research best practices, and recommend improvements that increase efficiency, consistency, and team effectiveness. 
  • Help pilot, document, and evaluate new or improved processes using defined success measures. 

Resource Development & Knowledge Management 

  • Create, update, and organize standard operating procedures, process maps, templates, checklists, toolkits, user guides, and playbooks. 
  • Support centralized resource libraries and improve the findability, usability, consistency, and maintenance of departmental information. 
  • Develop onboarding, training, and reference materials that help team members understand and adopt operational processes. 
  • Apply clear document standards, version control, and accessibility considerations when developing resources. 

Gap Analysis, Research & Strategic Support 

  • Conduct environmental scans, benchmarking, and internal discovery to identify white-space opportunities, unmet needs, and operational gaps. 
  • Synthesize qualitative and quantitative findings into concise summaries, recommendations, and leadership-ready presentations. 
  • Help prioritize opportunities based on impact, effort, urgency, stakeholders, and alignment with department goals. 
  • Support annual planning, special projects, and continuous-improvement initiatives as assigned. 



Qualifications

  • Senior, graduate student, or recent graduate pursuing a degree in Business Administration, Operations Management, Project Management, Public Administration, Public Health, Nonprofit Management, Data Analytics, Communications, or a related field. 
  • Must have course work or experience in project management, process improvement, operational strategy, organizational effectiveness, or nonprofit operations. 
  • Intermediate proficiency in SharePoint specifically building out SharePoint pages required.
  • Certified Associate in Project Management (CAPM) certification a plus but not required.
  • Experience with Power BI, Smartsheet, Microsoft Copilot, process-mapping tools, or other project management platforms is a plus but not required. 
  • Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and ability to manage multiple priorities. 
  • Ability to gather information, identify patterns, ask thoughtful questions, and translate findings into practical recommendations. 
  • Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively in a cross-functional, remote, or hybrid environment. 
  • Intermediate proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint. As well as intermediate proficiency in Canva.
  • Demonstrated curiosity, initiative, adaptability, professionalism, and commitment to continuous learning. 
  • Required: Reliable WiFi Connection.
  • Minimum availability of 20 hrs./wk., M-F between the hours of 8:30am-5pm.
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States for any employer without sponsorship, now or in the future.  For any roles working remotely, the work must also be performed inside the United States, not in a foreign country.
