    Responsibilities

    The American Heart Association (AHA) has a great opportunity for Regulatory Affairs Manager in our Washington, DC office.

     

    Under the direction of the Vice President of Federal Advocacy, you would be responsible for monitoring, analyzing, and drafting responses to a prescribed set of federal regulatory and reimbursement-related issues that impact the association’s public policy agenda.  The primary focus of the AHAs regulatory work is with the Department of Health and Human Services and its key agencies: Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, Food and Drug Administration, and Health Resources and Services Administration. Major topics would include rules that impact ACA markets and patient protections, Medicare coverage determinations and Medicare payment rules, and FDA initiatives focused on drug/device development and safety. As part of your work, you would also identify opportunities for high level volunteers and staff to serve as representatives of the Association on appropriate federal regulatory and oversight bodies, including advisory panels and councils.  Other duties may include providing limited lobbying support on proposals related to delivery system reform, quality improvement, laboratory developed tests, and other issues.

     

    Essential Job Duties:

    • Monitor relevant regulatory issues in defined areas on a daily basis and identify opportunities for consideration by the AHA leadership on a weekly basis.
    • Provide relevant verbal and written updates and briefings to AHA leadership and volunteers.
    • Work with appropriate staff and volunteers to prepare relevant regulatory comments and correspondence to federal agencies.
    • Brief AHA witnesses and volunteers, in preparation for federal agency hearings and meetings. This includes preparation of written and oral statements and other presentations.
    • Develop and maintain solid relationships with appropriate federal regulatory and coalition partner staffs. Facilitate and/or initiate communications between senior AHA staff and volunteers and key federal agency personnel.
    • Develop and maintain strong relationships with staff in other departments, while monitoring and reporting on issues relevant to their work.
    • Attend relevant advisory committee meetings, federal agency meetings, coalition meetings, press conferences, issue briefings, hearings, etc.
    • Provide input for Federal Advocacy communications materials, as necessary.

    Qualifications

    • Bachelor’s degree in Government Relations, Political Science, or a related field.
    • Minimum of three (3) years of experience in and knowledge of regulatory affairs.
    • Knowledge of federal legislative and executive branch procedures and policies.
    • Knowledge of relevant health issues.
    • Prior experience writing regulatory comment letters.
    • Ability to identify issues and opportunities in the legislative environment that will help further the mission of the American Heart Association.
    • Excellent writing and oral communication skills and the ability to think analytically.
    • Ability to operate with minimum supervision, take initiative, and produce results.

    Here are some of the preferred skills we are looking for:

    • Master’s degree in Public Policy, Pubic Administration, Political Science or related field desirable.
    • Experience working within a federal agency such as CMS or HHS desirable.
