The National Hypertension Initiative is funded by the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) Office of the Assistant Secretary of Health, with funding from the Office of Minority Health and the Health Resources and Services Administration. The National Hypertension Initiative will improve COVID-related health outcomes for highly impacted racial and ethnic minorities by addressing hypertension as a key risk factor. The American Heart Association (AHA) will provide technical assistance to Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA)-funded health centers to increase provider and clinician engagement in implementing evidence-based practices and will also include a community integration component, as well as a national targeted media and public education campaign.  


This is a full time, benefits eligible, grant funded opportunity. Current funding will expire on 12/2023.


The American Heart Association (AHA) has an excellent opportunity for a Quality Programs Manager, Hypertension based out of our National Center office located in Dallas, TX (remote/home based is acceptable).


There are four openings for the Programs Manager position


This individual will be responsible for the day-to-day quality improvement functions, predominantly in the outpatient setting, of the DHHS-funded National Hypertension Initiative, jointly funded by the DHHS Office of Minority Health (OMH) and Health Resources and Services Administration. The vision of the Initiative is to address health disparities in hypertension among racial and ethnic groups nationwide through a multi-prong strategy targeted to healthcare centers and clinicians, communities, and the public.

  • Execute quality strategic plan for hypertension program for assigned accounts. Provide consultation, direction, and support to clinics and/or providers as it relates improving care and treatment of outpatient patients with high blood pressure. Establish onboarding and quality training for clinics. Monitor and report on project/grant needs and deliverables
  • Provide training and consultation on quality or process improvement including best practices and successful implementation strategies. Cultivate relationships with physician champions and clinical leads within participating sites. Provide training through webinars, regional quality education events, and one on one consultation to improve care, measure improvement and outcomes
  • Lead and direct the onboarding of clinics and other appropriate healthcare sites into initiative. Establish and oversee achievement of project goals and objectives. Communicate through virtual meetings and collaboratives. Provide for travel to project sites as needed to conduct invited site visits and provide educational assistance
  • Understand reporting and data collection requirements for clinics and assist in the onboarding process of data collection. Analyze and consult clinics on results of measure adherence and data throughout the initiative
  • Collaborate and participate in strategies across Quality team to help evaluate and implement growth. Develop and deliver account plans and management strategies with program operations team


  • Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent work experience
  • Two (2) - Five (5) years of relevant experience
  • Experience in healthcare or in a public health-related organization with clinical, quality improvement, program development or systems improvement responsibilities
  • Experience supervising a team
  • Project management skills and experience; experience in influencing performance without direct line accountability
  • Basic knowledge and understanding of healthcare information technology such as e-medical records, healthcare IT or related systems or database functions
  • Ability to analyze and interpret technical requirements to improve data sharing and integration
  • Strong interpersonal and relationship building skills
  • Excellent oral and written communication
  • Ability to function independently with minimal supervision
  • Ability to work in a team environment and interact with all levels of American Heart Association staff, volunteers and the public
  • Comprehensive Microsoft Office suite skills including Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook

Preferred Experience:

  • Advanced degree in Healthcare Administration, Nursing, Science or related area
