Due to the current pandemic, daily travel is minimal and voluntary to ensure the health and safety of staff. In the future, this position may resume daily.  All AHA offices are closed and staff are currently working from home. Offices will be reopening in October 2021; this position will resume to being based in the local office.



The American Heart Association (AHA) has an excellent opportunity for a Temporary Blood Pressure Program Specialist in our Eastern States Region located in Saddle Brook NJ or Pittsburgh PA The Program Specialist is responsible for duties associated with execution of the Pressure for Change Project funded by the Bayer Fund, a Blood Pressure Improvement Initiative in Pittsburgh, PA and Northern NJ.


Duties include training and implementation of blood pressure improvement program at healthcare clinics, processing and evaluation of data, and collaborating with internal and external colleagues on a variety of other important tasks that support the deliverables of the grant.


This position is a temporary (four-month) part-time, grant funded position focused on improving hypertensive control in clinical and community settings in multiple communities in Northern NJ and Pittsburgh, PA communities.  This temporary hourly position has a 15 to 20-hour work week; preferred schedule- 3-4 days per work week, 5 hours per day.  Position currently is home-based; when safe and permitted, position may conduct work in the community and/or local AHA office.

Clinical Improvement:

  • Ensure assigned organizations have access to the breadth and depth of resources available from the AHA by leveraging resources, tools and national center assets (e.g., communication, science, advocacy, field resources). Utilize existing AHA materials, products and recruitment tools or develop new tools and materials as needed. Develop plans for disseminating or distributing resources and tools through local/state or region communication or social media assets.
  • Establish, collect, and report on measurements of success, such as program participant data, trends, and improvement or control of hypertension. Assists in the development of appropriate reports, evaluations, and data gathering as required.
  • Develop and report project and partnership activities and status. Provide evidence-based results to leadership as requested.
  • Lead training (lunch and learns, webinars, 1:1 assistance, develop webinar, etc.)
  • Provide training re: Validating devices, training staff, measuring accurately
  • Provide training needs re: Establishing SMBP programs
  • Provide training needs re: BP Cuff loaner program for ongoing SMBP
  • Provide technical assistance to clinics for registration and data submission for AHA Target BP program
  • Maintain ongoing communication with participating clinics

Process, Record and Monitor Data

  • Entering, tracking, and maintaining critical data related to execution of the grant

Primary responsibilities include (but are not limited to):

  • General data entry into tracking tool or Microsoft tool
  • Processing data and ensuring accurate record-keeping
  • Monitoring data for completeness and accuracy and correcting any irregularities
  • Generating reports as needed

Support Services

  • Maintaining a high level of service by responding to customer inquiries both internally and externally in a knowledgeable and timely manner, with dignity and respect
  • Performing other duties as required to support achievement of the Grant’s goals and deliverables
  • Assisting in the coordination and execution of meetings and communications
  • Preparing presentations, correspondence and documentation in a timely manner including meeting minutes
  • Working independently and within a team


Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Nursing, Public Health, Nutrition or related area, or equivalent work experience

  • Two (2) years of experience in supporting community programs

  • Knowledge of government processes, community groups and influencers

  • Excellent written/oral communication skills, as well as demonstrated skills in consultation and meetings management

  • Expertise in creating documents in MS Office Suite

​Preferred Qualifications:

  • Registered Nurse preferred
